BUNTES: Class Field Theory

2022 Spring

Overview

Spring 2022 BUNTES will cover approaches to class field theory. Meetings will occur in-person at Boston University's math department.

A majority of the semester will be spent exploring the basics and facets of class field theory, ranging from basic algebraic number theory to L-function methods, Galois cohomology of ideles, local-to-global approach, and the global-to-local approach. The remainder (if any) of the semester will be spent on developments of class field theory to be determined. Possible topics are explicit class field theory, the relationship with Langlands, geometric class field theory, etc.

The main references will be Milne's notes on class field theory [Mil], Lang's Algebraic Number Theory as well as his two volumes on cyclotomic fields, and Cassels and Frohlich.
